Robert Fisk is one of my heroes. This extract is a remarkably brilliant piece of writing.
The UN speech he describes was something memorable and vivid. it sticks out like a huge pustule on the neck of civilisation. Here were leaders of the western world presenting a very poor case for a war which Kofi Annan says broke the United Nations Charter, with the sort of smiles that only go with the start of a lasting peace.
Colin Powell now describes it as a permanent dark stain on his career record.
