"Vote libdem get conservative" is no different in tone to the tactics the tories were using before they lost power "Labour have no experience in government" etc etc.
It's scare tactics plain and simple and only really effective against those voters who don't think before putting their cross on the ballot. Unfortunately it'll probably work, this time.
